A Degas Debate: The Question of Posthumous Castings and Cancelled Plates
Museum curators and scholars generally accept that estate castings of wax sculptures are
legitimate and should be treated as original works of art. This view has been challenged by
Florida artist and art dealer Gary Arseneau who questions the authenticity of
posthumous casts. What do you think? Learn more during our Degas Debate
on Sunday, April 7 starting at 2:00 pm. Arseneau and an expert in 19th century
French art will each share their views on the question. Free to members, $5.00
for non-members. Reservations required.
Degas and the Louvre
We think of Degas as the quintessential French Impressionist whose work
reflects the bold brushwork and urban subject matter favored by the
Impressionists. This lecture will focus on the lesser-known Degas—the artist that
frequented the Louvre and aspired to draw like an Old Master. Curator
Marianne Lorenz will explore Degas’ relationship to the past on Sunday, May 5
at 2:00 pm. Free to members and $5.00 for non-members. Reservations
The Circle of Degas
This lecture will explore Degas’ relationship with his contemporaries and
friends. Although he was a lifelong bachelor, Degas had a wide circle of friends and artistcolleagues
who form a virtual “Who’s Who” of 19th century Paris. Curator Marianne Lorenz will
examine the work of Degas as it relates to his contemporaries on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 pm.
Free to members and $5.00 for non-members. Reservations required.
