If you put your ear to the street, you can hear the rumble of the world in motion; people going to and from work, to school, to the grocery store. You may even hear the whisper of their living rooms, their conversation, their complaints, and if you're lucky, their laughter. If you're almost anywhere in America , you'll hear something different, something special, something you recognize but haven't heard in a long time. It is the sound of a real celebration.
It is not New Year's, and it is not a political convention. It is neither a prime time game-show, nor a music video countdown, bloated with fame and sponsorship. What you are hearing is the love for a music. It is the unbridled outcry of support for a song that sings to the heart, that dances with the soul. The jubilation is in the theaters, the bars, the music clubs, the festivals. The love is for a band.
The songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along.
They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that's left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That's the commotion, that's the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that's what you'll find.
DeVotchKa: DeVotchKa has had a subtle, underground presence in the world of mainstream music for over ten years. Many may not know that the gypsy folk/punk band from Colorado provided the score for the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine and that their tour dates bring in huge audiences. While they are not the only gypsy band in the music world today, they do possess a unique, romantic sound produced by classical and folk instruments that are rarely used in mainstream music. The sound has become a hit on DeVotchKa's latest album, 100 Lovers, and is drawing huge crowds on current 2011 tour dates.
The group formed in Denver, Colorado circa 1997 and currently features Nick Urata (lead vocals, guitar, piano, trumpet, theremin, bouzouki), Jeanie Schroder (double bass, flute, sousaphone), Tom Hagerman (piano, violin, accordion), and Shawn King (drums, trumpet). DeVotchKa began performing as a backup band for various burlesque shows on tour dates, including that of Dita Von Teese. After playing whatever tour dates came their way, the band independently released their debut album, SuperMelodrama, in 2000. During this time, DeVotchKa devoted time to collaborating and touring the world on concert schedules with peers Calexico and Gogol Bordello, which helped increase their popularity.
DeVotchKa gained widespread notoriety with the release of their 2004 album, How It Ends. Music from the album received play on underground radio shows, including KCRW Los Angeles' "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show. Filmmakers Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton heard DeVotchKa on the program and approached the group to perform the score for their debut film, Little Miss Sunshine. In 2008, DeVotchKa continued their rise to fame with the release of A Mad & Faithful Telling. The album reached #9 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and the singles "New World" and "Head Honcho" were used in the Showtime show Weeds. Following the success of the album, DeVotchKa embarked on numerous tour dates which included critically acclaimed performances at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Coachella music festivals.
DeVotchKa has pulled out all the stops on their most recent album, 100 Lovers, which was released in March 2011. The album features an ambitious sound and experimental recording techniques employed in a studio located in the Arizona desert. DeVotchka is on the final stretch of their current world tour, with only Bonnaroo and a few European dates left on their concert schedule. After Bonnaroo on June 11, the group will head to Europe for a number of festival tour dates in 2011, including the B-Sides Festival in Switzerland, the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Libra Festival in Italy, and the Wireless Music Festival in London. 2011 tour dates will end for DeVotchKa on September 30, when they will play at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA.
